Social media

Social media has a rather large impact on public opinion, many often turn to social media to form opinions about certain topics or trends that impact life outside the digital world. However much of this information is through a biased source. Influencers and other online faces use their platforms to their advantage to persuade audiences into buying a product or to push a trend or narrative. Through targeted algorithms and advertising many can persuade audiences into supporting the business they are sponsoring or product they are trying to sell. Another tactic I've often seen influencers use is through visual storytelling. Many often keep their audience engaged by making their videos visually appealing, through funny editing, interactive streaming, and entertaining body language audiences come to like the creator or influencer and be more likely to listen to certain opinions or beliefs the influencer might have. Creators also target certain demographics to create content for, through this one could shift certain beliefs or create new trends within the demographic thus persuading more people. The use of online spaces and media platforms also provides more of a reach compared to traditional media, rather than being forced to share in a specific community, many can go beyond their country to spread influence and persuade new audiences from different regions.

Gatekeeping is summarized as one person having the power over the narrative according to the lecture. How this applies to the overall storytelling theory is through the cultivated algorithm. By continuously pumping out content and or media sources for a certain topic and or product many are often subjected to heavily filtered information and or unreliable content. This intern heavily influences people and the communication seen within social media. Heavily filter media can ultimately be rather negative on the overall social communication on media platforms as it does not give the viewer a true understanding or representation of what the topic and/or product is that is being talked about or branded through popular content creators. Overall compared to traditional media there is a distinct disconnect between authentic communication and gatekeeping  information that does not give the audience a true understanding of what is going on. One could say that there is a distinct unreliability within content creators to their audience members because of these theories.

About Me

Hello all,  My name is Mackenzie Beasley and I am currently a psychology major but plan on switching into a forensic/mortuary program. I grew up here in Oregon within the Beaverton hillsboro area, right now I currently live in Corvallis and am going to school in the main OSU campus. I have never taken a communications class before and am admittedly a bit nervous to do so but i'm hoping it will be a good experience and will help me within my career path. I primarily use instagram and tiktok to communicate with others online, I use these two due to their easy access and popularity, many of my friends use these apps and I can easily get in contact with them. One fun fact about myself is that I like to cross stitch and draw. Below you will find pictures of my cat, I look forward to getting to know you all. :]

Podcast Research

Which podcast did you choose to listen to and why? How did the host's delivery (pitch, pauses, rate of speaking, and volume) impact the overall effectiveness of the podcast? Was a podcast the best way to communicate this information, or would a video presentation have been more effective?  The podcast I chose to listen to was episode 57 of Crime, Conspiracy, Cults, and Murder. The reason why I chose this particular podcast is because I am interested in true crime/history  and enjoy consuming media regarding it. The host of this podcast is a popular tik toker, which drew me in to her content and I have been a fan of this particular podcast ever since. Since Kallmekris is a popular media creator her overall delivery was very over dramatic and boisterous, meant to catch your attention with visuals and facts that keep you interested. Overall Kallmekris’ delivery kept me interested throughout the podcast, despite the rather macabre content, she manages to approach these topi...

Prensky’s/Kirschner Resear

 1. Voice  to Prensky, what is the immigrant/native divide, and how has it affected how students learn?       According to Prensky, the immigrant/native divide is the disconnect between the Newer generation of young Native Americans and immigrants having a disconnect from the older generation regarding learning and schooling. Prensky states that both digital Immigrants and natives were born from a saturated world, and it is therefore naturally integrated within the way that they think and learn. The disconnect comes from how these digital native and immigrants are taught within an academic setting. Most newer generations want a fast-paced rich learning media tool that could help build real world learning experiences, however Many of these classes are still being taught by the older generation where the teaching is outdated and rather than having fast pace, learning topics or medias, they stick to a Lecture based learning Curriculum, and thus many students h...
